Samples are incredibly helpful. They're a great place to start when you're trying to figure out what colors, patterns, and styles you naturally gravitate toward.

But one of our favorite parts of the selection process is taking that next step and seeing the full slab.

A small sample can give you an idea of the color and general pattern, but a full slab allows you to see how the movement flows, how the colors work together, and what the material actually looks like on a much larger scale.

In most applications, you're going to see a significant portion of that slab in your finished space. You want to make sure you love more than just the two-inch sample.

This is especially important with natural stone.

One of the things that makes natural stone so special is that every slab is unique. Slabs from the same lot will typically have similar characteristics, but there will still be natural differences from one slab to the next. That's part of the beauty of choosing something that was literally formed in the earth.

And if you're wondering what styles are trending right now, we're seeing homeowners move toward warmer tones. Even when someone wants a white stone, we're increasingly seeing warmer whites instead of the cooler whites and grays that have dominated for years.

2. Your Stone Choices Can Affect Your Budget — So Compare Your Options

Living Next Door to the World’s Largest Open-Face Granite Quarry

Most people know Mount Airy, NC as the inspiration for Mayberry. Between the small town charm and the connection to Andy Griffith, that reputation has stuck for decades. Visitors come to see the nostalgia, walk the streets downtown, and take pictures with reminders of the classic show.

What most tourists don't know is that long before television crews arrived and long before Mayberry became a household name, Mount Airy was known for something pulled straight from the ground beneath it- Granite ! The town is home to the world’s largest open face granite quarry.

If you have ever seen photos of it, you know it is hard to miss. The quarry stretches out like a massive stone bowl carved into the earth, and the scale of it is hard to wrap your head around until you see it in person.

The term “open face quarry” simply means the granite is exposed at the surface instead of being mined through underground tunnels. Instead of digging deep below ground to reach the stone, the granite is already visible and can be removed from the top down.

Not a bad situation if you are in the granite business.

How Granite Forms and Why It Lasts

Even though the quarry is visible from the surface, granite itself actually forms deep underground. It begins as molten rock called magma that cools very slowly beneath the Earth’s crust. Because the cooling process happens over millions of years, large mineral crystals have time to form and lock tightly together. That slow formation process is what gives granite its incredible strength and durability. Mount Airy granite formed roughly 335 million years ago, long before the Appalachian Mountains looked the way they do today.

The strength and durability of natural stone is also why granite has been such a popular choice for countertops for so long. The stone is naturally resistant to heat, strong enough to handle everyday wear, and filled with unique patterns that make each slab one of a kind. From busy kitchens to commercial spaces, granite holds up to real life while still bringing natural beauty into a room.

Why Mount Airy Granite Is Above Ground

If granite forms so far underground, it is fair to wonder how Mount Airy ended up with such a massive quarry sitting right at the surface.

The answer comes down to time. A lot of time. Over hundreds of millions of years, the layers of soil and rock that once covered this enormous granite formation slowly eroded away. What remained was the granite body itself, exposed right at ground level.

That natural process created the massive open quarry Mount Airy became known for and revealed a deposit of granite that is remarkably consistent in color and grain. Because of that consistency, Mount Airy granite has been used in some impressive places, including the World War II Memorial and the Arlington Memorial Bridge.

Not bad for something that started as molten rock deep underground.

For quartz Countertops

Quartz countertops are popular because they're beautiful, durable, and relatively low maintenance.

Unlike natural stone, quartz does not need to be sealed. Quartz is a non-porous material, so sealing it is not part of its normal maintenance routine.

That doesn't mean quartz is completely maintenance-free, though. Holiday cooking still means more spills, heat, food preparation, and traffic on your countertops.

�� How to Clean Quartz

Wipe with a soft cloth, warm water, and mild soap.
Rinse thoroughly to remove any leftover residue.
Never use bleach, ammonia, paint removers, nail polish remover, or abrasive products like Comet®, Soft Scrub®, S.O.S.® pads, or Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.
Always use hot pads or trivets under hot cookware such as pans, griddles, slow cookers, or air fryers.
Use a cutting board when chopping or slicing.
Wipe away spills promptly before they dry.

Can You Put Hot Pans on a Countertop?

It's best to use a trivet or hot pad under hot cookware regardless of your countertop material. This is especially important with quartz. While quartz is durable, the resins used in engineered quartz can be affected by high temperatures. Johnson Granite recommends using trivets under hot plates, pans, crock pots, and similar items.

Rooted in Stone

Mount Airy is a town built on granite, even its soil is mixed with residue of the stone. Long before anyone had even heard of “Mayberry," Mount Airy was already earning acclaim as “The Granite City” largely due to the existence of 40 acres of bare rock just a couple miles south of town. Known to locals as “The Rock”, the land was deemed “useless” by the farmer who purchased the parcel as part of a bigger tract. This “useless” portion of land is now home to the world’s largest open-faced granite quarry, owned and operated by North Carolina Granite Corporation, A Division of Polycor.

The Granite Quarry gave rise to many regional stone makers and several members of the Johnson family got their start at “The Rock”. Decades later members of that same family decided to start one of Mount Airy’s first countertop fabrication and installation companies. As second and third-generation stoneworkers, Larry and Brian Johnson knew plenty about working with stone products, but not much about owning their own business. In the beginning, they did all of the work themselves…relying on just a few tools of the trade, Brian and Larry’s strong backs, and a keen eye for bookkeeping from Linda, the family matriarch.

The company’s first big break came when a stranger entered the shop looking for a unique granite. The customer was so impressed by her experience at Johnson Granite that she paid IN FULL and UPFRONT for her countertop job! Her complete trust in them made a real impression on Larry, Linda, and Brian. Larry recalls how this single transaction served as a turning point for the small company and says they have never lacked for work since that day! He refers often to that client as “an angel” because of how she blessed them.

Johnson Granite, Inc. may have started in 2000 with Larry and Brian producing only 2-3 kitchens a week, but now the company averages 20-30 jobs in production on any given day! Johnson Granite has also expanded its reach to include two additional locations: one in Roanoke, VA, and the other just down the road in Winston-Salem, NC. With more than 100 employees and a distinction as the region’s only Natural Stone Institute (NSI) accredited countertop shop, Johnson Granite, Inc. has built a solid reputation for delivering high-quality custom stone, fabrication, craftsmanship combined with superior service all while maintaining a warm, family feel across North Carolina, Virginia, and even West Virginia.
